Medical Update – Using Creativity to spread awareness of Covid 19

A few months ago we woke up to the news of a new virus in China, the Corona Virus or Covid-19 as we’ve come to know it. At the time, the world was not as concerned as it seemed to be a Chinese problem but before we knew any better the whole world was under quarantine.

As if the virus on its own wasn’t a threat, the world had to deal with the problem of fake news and myths, speculation and misinformation on the virus, its causes and cures.

It’s unfortunate that in this digital age one of the most dangerous threats we face on a daily basis is fake news, as anyone can write an article on any website, publish it and spread it without needing any verification, this was one of the major reasons fake news about the virus spread like a wild fire! Claims of drinking “tea with lemon water” and other bogus suggestions flooded the whatsapp community and other social media platforms.

Fortunately the media and tech giants had to step in to help reduce the spread of fake news, Whatsapp  introduced measures to help reduce the spread of viral messages and also started working with WHO to create Automated Lines which dispatch verified information on the virus. Read more on that on the article below:

The truth is there is no “Correct way to panic“, we all handle trauma and dreadful news in our own ways.  We respond differently to the unforeseen problems that life throws at us in our own tempos and style. Some are quick to respond out of fear of falling victim to the threat while others wait for someone they personally know to first succumb to the threat so they can take it seriously. One truth remains regardless of how you deal with it, the truth does not disappear if you ignore it, it doesn’t change whether or not you don’t believe it, the truth remains simply the truth. Facts are facts, and even though it is believed that facts are subject to change, shouldn’t you first know what said facts are before you can dispute, contest or disprove them?

In the words of the late Martin Luther King Jnr, “Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”

And the Holy Bible says in Hosea 4: 6 a “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”

Ignorance is not an excuse nor does it exempt you from encountering life’s challenges. A shona proverb says,” ndamba kuudzwa akaonekwa nembonje pahuma”, and i guess the english equivalent of that proverb is,” to be forewarned is to be forearmed”.

It is difficult to face an opponent you know nothing about as you will have challenges in preparations.

We  decided to join the fight and work with the relevant authorities in raising awareness on the virus and spreading authentic verified information.
